Locmiquélic, Bretagne, France
January-May 2020
Locmiquélic has a direct relationship with water. This conditions the way the city is practiced daily. Located on a coastal point, the project is then visible from several points of view. Its scale and its relationship to the landscape is, therefore, an important element to take into account. In its immediate environment, the museum has a view on the island of Saint-Michel, the industrial port of Lorient and the marina of Locmiquélic. Our figure is drawn by major axes. The fault that splits the building into two parts is introduced by the existing path and offers a visual continuity towards the sea. The alignment to the houses allows to hold the project in its context. The gap thus created allows to reinforce the entrance device and to make it visible from the street. The orientation of this building has been identified by various elements: the existing vegetation, in order to preserve it; to allow different views on Lorient, Saint Michel Island and Locmiquélic; to introduce a central patio, places of circulation and contemplation. Several accesses to the museum are possible: one is on the east coast; the other is from the memorial and the last access is from the north of the rue du rivage. To get the visitor to the entrance device, we installed a low wall underlining the street, inviting the visitor to walk along it until he turns around.
